Road to Punsand Bay

We left Weipa and headed to Punsand Bay, staying overnight on Canal Creek, via Scrubby Creek and the OT. Canal Creek makes up one of the many picturesque creeks on the Old Tele Line Track and is a free camp spot a stones throw north of the iconic Eliot Falls!

The photo to the right shows how destructive the wet can be on the landscape

Scrubby Creek splash down! Bonnet wash on this one. Stay left heading north.

About to jump in at Eliot Falls

I could hear Kaz saying..'you are mad'

Touchdown!

Weipa

Sunsets...One of the reason's we choose to spend a few "wind down" day's in Weipa.
Sports fishing is also a huge draw card for this place, whilst uploading this a guy was chatting to me that caught 13 Spanish Macs today, all around the 1m mark in length!
Rio Tinto bauxite mine operates in Weipa, since 1961, and has enough reserves to last another 150yrs. There is also a RAAF base here, however this is now shut down and used as an illegal immigrant housing facility.

Road to Weipa

Following this post are some shots capturing our travels from Undura to Weipa.
We didn't take many snaps at Weipa as we used this place to just stop, stock up and prepare for the final push north to the tip!

 Sunflower fields north of Capella

Relaxing after a long dusty drive at Hann River roadhouse... and this inquisitive peacock wasn't getting any of my chips!

Kaz in front of what were many termite mounds we passed

Kaz doing a runner... no where to hide on this road :)

 A couple of roadside onlookers
A few final pics from Undara... then onward to Weipa!

Lookout over remnant volcano's that help formed Undara's lava tubes.

A pic of our new holiday home we found on one of our many bush walks... Guttering needs a little attention!

Undara Lava Tubes

Inside one of 60 odd tubes discovered at Undara.

The tour guide was really good, lots of information that I have now forgotton...
This was a 4hr tour, we got to descend down a black hole and into a tube, the only tube that you have to ascend the same way out.

On the above photo, how good is your imagination? This was inside a lava tube and is a natural formation.. but I'll be damned if this doesn't look like a swagman with his jumbuck! I'm sure Banjo would agree :)
A view looking out from inside a tube.

Undara Volcanic Park Bar and Restaurant!

The Accommodation here varies from unpowered tent sites to old train carriages, these make for a unique setting.
The facilities here were very good, hot showers and cold beer, plus lots of shady spots to camp!

Ground like concrete, well granite actually, made it a bitch to hammer pegs in!

1st Stop... but too early for a cold one, so we settled for a nice coffee at "Cafe Delicious"

Stayed at Rubyvale for the 1st night and
found this contraption...
I think it's a fossicking rig, though feel free to
correct me if anyone knows for sure?

Our Trek North

This is a rough guide on the path we will take north.
We decided to take the inland route via Rubyvale and Mt Suprise.
We have never been this way or this far north and hope to see some interesting things along the way!
